![]() ![]() It’s not long before it becomes apparent that something is wrong- her mother is trying to fit as much time in with her daughter as she can, before she’s no longer around to do it. Liv’s mum seems to be tired all the time, and, looking back at some of the photos she has taken, Liv can see that her mother’s weight has dropped dramatically. ![]() ![]() But there’s a downside to all this positive bonding. She gives Liv her old diaries from when she was a teenager (to demonstrate that most young kids experience the same things in life), and takes her on shopping trips, buying her clothes that she can grow into. Liv’s mum suddenly begins to show her things that she considers important (life lessons, if you will) - like how to make spaghetti Bolognese, and how to put on makeup properly. When her mum thwarts her plans to get her ears done, and embarrasses her in front of everyone, Liv is furious- how could her mother be so uncool? But then, in a complete turn-around from her usual behaviour, Liv’s mum offers a compromise. ![]() All minor things, it would seem, but very important to a pre-teen girl who just wants her peers to see her as the cool girl she knows she can be. This novel is an unsettling and unflinching look at the idea of identity and what it means to be human. The novel is told from the perspective of Eva, who is a helpless spectator inside of their joint body, only able to watch as Addie controls their movements and actions, the soul that should have died long ago. There is a profound bond between these two souls and Zhang plays upon a certain level of push and pull that characterises Eva and Addie’s relationship. There is a certain level of tension between these two souls that share a body, a weakness and vulnerability, yet an uncompromising need and reliance on one another, particularly as they are faced with a world that would see them destroyed. Zhang’s prose is lovely the struggle between Eva and Addie to try to be two distinct individuals whilst being physically the same person is very compelling and also rather sad. Heinlein gets on his soapbox a little about personal freedoms and politics, but it's all good since the main message is equality for all races, including Martians and Venerians (aliens from Venus). There are a couple of instances of eyebrow-raising dialogue, and the women mostly have secretarial-type jobs, but it's par for what you'd normally expect to see in 1950's books (even science fiction the imaginations of mid-century SF authors had their limits), and nothing was too far out of line. Double Star, I think, does the job pretty well. My (self-imposed) mission was to find a Robert Heinlein story where the enjoyment of the tale isn't swamped by the offensive content for which Heinlein is, unfortunately, well known.
